Abstinence and Its Applications in the Glorious Qur’an

By

Prof Ahmad Sulayman al-Basha’irah*

This paper sheds light on one of the noble qualities mentioned in the Glorious Qur’an which is ‛iffah and can be translated by the word abstinence, i.e.,  abstaining from what is not proper. It is this quality that unveils the self-esteem and internal control emanating from piety.

The paper consists of three chapters. The first discusses the meaning of ‛iffah etymologically, as a technical term and in the Qur’anic usage.

The second chapter deals with how the Glorious Qur’an extolls this quality, and directs Muslims to adopt it.

The third chapter deals with the application of this quality in the Glorous Quran.
