Regulation on the Alifs that Imam al-Dāni was Silent Over In His Book al-Muqni‘

Dr. Muhammad Shafā‘at Rabbāni[4]

Abstract

This research discusses a subject in the science of Uthmanic writing. It explains one of its puzzles by providing answer to the question concerning the true opinion of Imam al-Dāni over the alifs that he passed over in silence without explicitly stating their regulation. This is a significant issue concerning those devoted to Mushaf writing.

The research was able to come to a clear conclusion through evidences presented from al-Dāni’s book “al-Muqni‘” and other original sources by prominent scholars. It was articulated in a preface, two chapters and a conclusion.

In the preface, the research presented a concise introduction of Imam Abu ‘Amr ‘Uthmān bin Sa‘id al-Dāni (d 444 AH) who al-Dhahabi has his famous  comment about that “The reciters of the Qurۥan are all submissive to his literatures, confident of his transmissions in Readings of the Qurۥan, Qurۥanic Writings, Tajwid, waqf wa ibtidāۥ and on to him ended the peak in accurate phrasing of the sciences of Qurۥanic readings and Masāhif, with creativity in science of hadith, tafsir, Arabic syntax etc. it also contained a brief introduction of his book “al-Muqni‘ fi ma‘rifat marsūm masāhif al-amsār”, which is considered as one of the most famous and significant books written on the science of Qurۥan Writing. It was specifically written for students of Qurۥanic readings and Qurۥan writers. This book has been able to retain its importance all through the past centuries and got many of its manuscripts spread all over private and public libraries of the world. It has obtained various and numerous editions with the first in the year 1932 and the last in 2011.

The research, in its first chapter, presented approximate statistics for the Qurۥanic words that came in the seven forms (fa‘āl, fi‘āl, fa‘‘āl, fā‘il, fu‘lān, fi‘lān and mif‘āl) which al-Dāni stipulated the assertion of alif in them, with adherence to mentioning the words he excluded from them. The total of what was arrived at on these forms is about 2500 words.

In the second chapter are proofs from al-Muqni‘ and other original sources stating the assertion of alif by al-Dāni in the words he was silent over in his book “al-Muqni‘”. These books include among others: al-wasilah by al-Sakhāwi, al-Jumlah by al-Ju‘bari, talkhis al-fawāۥid by Ibn al-Qāsih and so on and so forth from ancient works and al-Muyassar fi ‘ilm rasm al-mushaf by Dr. Ghanim Qaddūri al-Hamad from modern works.

The conclusion has in it important results the research reached at.
