A Biography of the Scholar ibn Shaddad and a Study of his Forgotten Manuscripts

Dr Ammar Amin al-Didu*

The purpose of this study is to rediscover the sixth century Arabic Muslim scholar, Abd al-Majid ibn Shaddad al-Tamimi. He was known for his scholarship in the various qira’at. Until now, no contemporary scholars of the Quranic sciences have studied any of the scholar’s works or looked into his life despite his being a prestigious and very well-known imam of his time. His forgotten legacy is not anything unusual in the Islamic world as many a scholar has been neglectfully forgotten and his works lost. It is believed the reasons why the scholar’s works have gone unnoticed in the Islamic world lie in the many calamities that have unfolded over time since his death with many major libraries being destroyed.

Another purpose of this study is to look into two of ibn Shaddad’s original manuscripts that have not been studied to date. They are Ikhtiyar Abi Ja‘far al-Madani and Qira’at Abi ‘Amr al-Basri.

This paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter gives a detailed biography of the imam. The second and third chapters look at the afore-mentioned manuscripts. Finally, the fourth chapter focuses on some aspects that distinguish the author’s methedology.

One of the most important things intended to manifest itself from this research is the importance of reviving the neglected works and biographies of major scholars. Moreover, the research aims at giving a profile of the author based upon his unique method of compiling and categorising the information contained  in his works. This research has been conducted in the hope of assisting fellow researchers who wish to study the life and works of ibn Shaddad.
