Examining the Evidence Regarding the Blindness of  Prophet Shu‘ayb (May peace and blessings be him)

Dr Jamal Mahmud Abu Hassan*

It is mentioned in many of the tafsir and Hadith books that the prophet of Allah, Shu‘ayb, was blind. The mufassirûn quote a marfû‘ hadîth, and statements from ibn ‘Abbâs, Sufyân al-Thawri, Sa‘îd ibn Jubayr and others all of which confirm and support this opinion. Such opinions might be the reason for the scholars of ‘aqîdah accepting the possibility of Shu‘ayb being blind.

This paper is based on discussing the evidence and sayings in a scientific way aiming at arriving at the correct opinion in this issue. All of this has been done for the sake of defending Allah’s prophet, Shu‘ayb, peace and blessings be on him and on our prophet Muhammad and all other prophets and messengers of Allah.
