MORPHOLOGICAL PHENOMENA

AND

THEIR ROLE IN UNDERSTANING THE MEANINGS OF THE QUR’ÂN

Dr Sulayman bin Ali*

I have studied in this paper a number of French and English translations which have been well received by research scholars on account of their precision in conveying the meanings of the Glorious Qur’ân on the one hand, and the honesty and the sympathetic approach of the translators on the other.

I here summarize the salient features of this study:

  • I started this study with an introduction wherein I explained what is meant by a morphological form, how the morphological system works, and the importance of taking into consideration the syntactical context when looking for the meaning of a given form.
  • I paid special attention to the study of how a single morpheme may have multiple meanings citing examples from the Glorious Qur’ân and the interpretation of the exegetes and the translations of the translators, and their efforts in determining the meaning of a particular morpheme.
  • I also focused on the semantic implications of the definite article al-, and its use with some morphemes such as ism al-fâil and the comparative morpheme, afal.
  • I have also studied meanings derived from morphemes used to carry out functions other their own such as the use of ism al-fâ il to function as ism al-mafûl, or the use of a morpheme of mubâlaghah for a meaning without mubâlaghah.
  • At the end of the study, I dealt with some semantic connotations found in some morphemes in the Glorious Qur’ân, also Qur’ânic preference of some forms to others, and how it effects the meaning of an ayah in the context in which it has been used.
