Objections Pertaining to Rasm and Dabt Raised by the Commentators of al-Muhtawā al-Jāmi‘ – Dr Ahmad Kūri ibn Yābah al-Sāliki

The manzūmah known as al-Muhtawā al-Jāmi Rasm al-Sahābah wa Dabt al-Tābi has enjoyed an unprecedented reputation in the land of Shanqit and the surrounding areas since it was composed by Imam al-Talib ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Amin al-Jakani (d circa 1250 AH). Many scholars wrote commentaries on it, some criticizing it and others defending it. This resulted in academic discussions and a rich collection of scholarly material in the fields of rasm and dabt.

As some mushafs including two published by King Fahd Glorious Qur’an Printing Complex in Madinah (one of them according to the Reading of Warsh and the other according to the Reading of Qālūn) have relied on this manzumah, it has become imperative to study the criticisms levelled against it, and the arguments of those who have defended it, and to evaluate how these discussions have contributed to influence the rasm and dabt of the mushafs which have relied on it. And this is what this paper tries to do.

The paper consists of a preface, an introduction and three chapters.

The Preface deals with the importance of the subject and its methodology.

The Introduction speaks about the author and his manzumah, and explains the terms rasm and dabt.

The First Chapter deals with the criticisms levelled against the author’s views on rasm.

The Second Chapter deals with the criticisms levelled against the author’s views on dabt.

The Third Chapter deals with corrections of the manzumah.
