QurāĀnic Guidance for the Downtrodden Servants of Allah

An Objective Study

Dr MuĄammad ibn NĀĆir al-Čumayyid*

This paper discusses the meaning of istiăĂĀf (weakness), mustaăĂif and mustaăĂaf and the different types of weakness. It discusses some aspects of this weakness as mentioned in the Glorious Qur’an and reasons why they befell believers. Thereafter, I traced the Qur’anic guidance for the weak, and found it to be of two kinds:

  • Guidance of the heart such as belief in Allah, pondering over the natural phenomena and the history and past nations, trust in Allah, perseverance in times of trials and oppression, hope of Allah’s mercy, and anticipation of relief after distress.
  • Practical Guidance: these are invocation and worship, adherence to the Qur’an and the sunnah of the Prophet r without disputes, obedience to leaders without disobedience to Allah, providing counsel and advice to the leaders, avoiding confrontations and fighting, migration and availing oneself of legal exemptions in times of need.

This piece is aimed at guiding the Islamic ummah towards adhering to the wise guidance of the Qur’an and sunnah in times of weakness, as well as shunning actions variant to the Qur’an and  the sunnah. This is because in them both is guidance, light for the betterment of the future.
