THE IMPACT OF THE GLORIOUS QURAN ON ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY

Kamal al-Jumayli*

The Glorious Qur’ān was revealed in Arabic and written down in Arabic alphabet. Since that time interest in writing commenced as the Qur’ān called upon the Muslims to learn it.

Since the first century AH, improvement of the writing system was in progress. In the third century AH, rules and systems were devised till it emerged as an independent science known as Arabic Calligraphy. It developed into many styles of writing and reached the pinnacle of charm and beauty combining precision with beauty of form, originality of design and the sanctity of the text.

Thus it became an outstanding system of writing surpassing all others systems of the world, both modern and ancient, in beauty and precision. And but for the Glorious Qur’ān, it would not have attained this exalted position.
