Ibn Yalushah and His Book al-Fawa’id al- Mufahhamah

Dr al-Hadi ibn Muhammad Rushu*

Shaykh Muhammad Sharif  ibn Yalushah was born in Tunis in 1260 A.H. (1844 C.E). He joined the Zaytuna Mosque where he studied Islamic, philosophical and linguistic studies. He studied under great scholars like  Shaykhs Umar ibn al-Shaykh, Muhammad al-Makki ibn ‘Azzuz al-Nafti, and Muhammad Bashir al-Tuwati and others.
Shaykh ibn Yalushah had an encyclopedic culture but he was mostly talented in Quira’at and Tajwid. That is how he was appointed to head the mashyakhah of Qira’at  at the Zaytuna Mosque. He taught many well-known scholars such as Ibrahim al-Maraghni, ‘Ammar ibn Samidah al-Khayyati, Sadiq al-Aswad and Mukhtar al-Mu’addib.
He died in 1314 A.H. (1896 C.E.).
Among his many works are Tahrir al-Kalam fi Waqfi Hamzata wa Hisham and al-Fawa’id al-Mufahhamah fi Sharh al-Muqaddimah which, in fact, is a brief and concise explanation of  ibn al-Jazari’s introduction to tajwid. Ibn Yalushah adopted precision in the choice of his words and never claimed to be the only one to possess the truth. He drew the attention of his students to the many important points to be found in the book in the field of tajwid and qira’at.
