Linguists’ Positive Handling of the Qurۥanic Readings

Abstract
This paper highlights the endeavours of the scholars the Arabic Language, in the past and present, in the field of qirĀāĀt (the variant readings of the Qurۥan). It also highlights the close connection between the Arabic Sciences and the qirĀāĀt. It also brings out the continuity of scholarship between the ancient and modern scholars in this field.
The paper consists of the following two sections:
Section one: Ancient Linguists’ Handling of this phenomenon. This includes:
1- Resorting to the readings of the Qurۥan in areas of syntactic differences.
2- Citing Qurۥanic readings right from the emergence of Arabic linguistics.
3- Preparing works dedicated to the study of the various readings of the the Qurۥan.
4- Study of the various iĂrĀbic possibilities of the readings of the Qurۥan.
Section Two: The Moderns Interaction with the readings of the Qurۥan:
1- Phonetic study of the readings of the Qurۥan.
2- Resorting to Qurۥanic readings for substantiating linguistic theories.
3- Preparinh special lexicons for Qurۥanic readings.
4- Syntactical explanation of the readings the Qurۥan through interactive websites.
The study results are but not limited to:
– It is false to accuse the Basri linguists of denying many of the of readings the Qurۥan.
– Most of the Arabic linguists, both ancient and modern, respect the Qurۥanic readings and have served them as well.
