The Qur’ānic Treatment of the Question of Slavery

Dr Ahmad Sulaymān al-Bashā’irah*

This paper deals with the problem of slavery both in the ancient as well the modern times and highlights the Qur’ānic solution to this grave human problem.

The paper discusses the meaning of slavery, its causes, its legality, and deals in detail with the Islamic regulation regarding the treatment of the slaves which tries to preserve the human dignity of the slave.

Slavery according to Islam is a temporary  measure necessitated by need which Islam has confined to the situation of the prisoners of war.

The paper also makes a comparative study of the sharī‛a law vis-à-vis contemporary international law in this regard, and highlights the distinctive features and characteristics of the sharī‛a law in solving this  problem.
